When Roe Green Infants needed to refresh their school library, they turned a costly task into a sustainability success story. Rather than purchasing brand-new books, the sustainability working group decided to embrace reuse and reduce waste by sourcing second hand books from local charity shops.

The school formed a partnership with Oxfam in Ealing, reaching out to a specific branch to secure quality relevant books for their pupils.

The result? The school managed to restock the library for just £120, a fraction of what new books would have cost. This creative approach not only saved money but also gave old books a new home, reducing waste and supporting the circular economy.

This innovative approach feeds directly into the Waste and Consumption theme within the Our Schools Our World programme, demonstrating that sustainability can be woven effectively into school decision making. Roe Green Infants proved that sustainability doesn’t always require big budgets – just creativity, collaboration, and a willingness to think differently.
